Women may be more susceptible to infections during the luteal phase, possibly due to the hormone progesterone and its immunosuppressive effects. In our study, we compared 61 women with a natural menstrual cycle and 20 women using hormonal contraceptives. Women using hormonal contraceptives reported higher susceptibility to illness, while feelings of disgust and the increase of secretory immunoglobulin A (sIgA) in response to a sickness video were similar in both groups. Our results do not indicate an interaction between progesterone-induced immunosuppression and increased disgust or a proactive sIgA response.
