Welcome
The Institute of Animal Cell and Systems Biology (IZS) comprises seven working groups, one junior research group, and one associated research group that offer a wide basis in diverse areas of zoology in teaching and research, particularly in evolutionary biology and ecology. With more than 100 colleagues, we offer a modern and vigorous research environment. Additionally, we keep great company with the neighboring Leibniz-Institut for the Analysis of Biodiversity Change (LIB), located in the same building complex and with which we have numerous collaborations.
The following research groups in the Department of Biology are located at the IZS:
- Genome Informatics (Prof. Dr. Stefan Kurtz)
- History of the Natural Sciences (Prof. Dr. Stefan Kirschner)
- Evolutionary Immunogenomics (Prof. Dr. Tobias Lenz)
- Functional Ecology (Prof. Dr. Kathrin Dausmann)
- Molecular Evolutionary Biology (Prof. Dr Susanne Dobler)
- Molecular Animal Physiology (Prof. Dr. Christian Lohr; interim department head)
- Molecular Cell Biology of Animals (Prof. Dr. Baris Tursun)
- Animal Network Ecology (Prof. Dr. Jochen Fründ)
- Neurophysiology (Prof. Dr. Christian Lohr)
- Behavioral Biology (Prof. Dr. Jutta Schneider)
Junior Research Groups
- Neuroendocrinology (Jun.-Prof. Dr. Esther Diekhof)
- Population Genomics (Prof. Dr. Kathrin Anna Otte)
