A study conducted at the University of Hamburg explored how hormones during the menstrual cycle affect women’s attention to images of infants. The results show that in the follicular phase (the first phase of the cycle), higher estradiol levels are associated with increased attention to photos of infants. In contrast, progesterone had no influence on this specific form of attention. This suggests that estradiol may positively influence maternal caregiving behavior by acting as a dopamine-like stimulus in the brain's reward system.
