Aquatic and Terrestrial Ecosystems in FocusResearch at the Loki-Schmidt-Garden II

The second video on the research conducted by the Research Unit Animal Network Ecology at the Loki-Schmidt-Garden explores the interactions between aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems.
“One aspect that particularly interests me is the question of how different habitats—which have often been studied in isolation until now—are connected to one another. So how do interactions arise between species that live in water and on land? For example, what significance does it have that a meadow borders a pond?” says Professor Dr. Jochen Fründ. To understand this, the Research Group is investigating how dragonflies and geese influence these interactions.
Ole Rieken, a bachelor’s student in the Department of Biology, is researching the predator-prey relationship between dragonflies and pollinating insects on water lilies under the supervision of postdoctoral researcher Rebecca Oester; Dr. Oester is also supervising another research project on the interactions between geese and both ecosystems. “It is particularly important to me to share my enthusiasm for these habitats and to encourage students to go outdoors, make their own observations, and conduct experiments independently to learn more about nature and understand how it is changing. The Loki-Schmidt-Garden offers an excellent opportunity to carry out such experiments".
