With the picture ‘Puccinellia maritima under water - (knowledge) store for carbon’ by Ella Logemann, another photo has been added to the ‘Hall of Fame’ of the Research Training Group 2530. The artwork was selected as part of an internal photo competition among the Doctoral Researchers of RTG 2530, and further works will be added to the gallery in the coming years.
How does the plant diversity of salt marshes help to store carbon under the conditions of climate change? How do changing environmental conditions affect the ‘knowledge’ stored in plants with regard to their ecophysiological services? Ella Logemann is investigating these questions in her doctoral project as part of RTG 2530, which includes an experiment in a tidal basin with salt marsh plants under different hydrological conditions. The picture shows the andel (Puccinellia maritima), a grass commonly found in salt marshes, in the tidal basin experiment under water.
"I am extremely happy that our 'RTG Hall of Fame' is growing and that we now have the winner picture from 2023 on display”, says Prof. Dr. Kai Jensen, spokesperson of RTG 2530. “The picture of a submerged grass canopy clearly shows the complexity of even simple ecosystem compartments. With our research in RTG 2530, we try to better understand the functional role of this sometimes hidden complexity for carbon cycling.”
It’s the second time that Doctoral Researchers of the Research Training Group were invited to submit photos, illustrations or graphics of their research as part of an internal photo competition. In addition to the picture by Ella Logemann, which was selected from overall ten submissions, the graphic ‘Phytoplankton Retention Experiment’ by Laurin Steidle from 2022 is on display. Both artworks were also nominated for the DFG photo competitions of the respective years.
The images are on shown in the Institute of Plant Science and Microbiology on the ground floor in front of room E.084.
