A new work of art is hanging in the hallway of the Institute of Plant Sciences and Microbiology: The image "Phytoplankton Retention Experiment" by Laurin Steidle was selected in an internal photo competition among the doctoral researchers of RTG2530 and will be supplemented by further works in the upcoming years.
As part of an internal photo competition, the doctoral researchers of the Research Training Group were called upon to submit photos, illustrations or graphics of their research. With the image "Phytoplankton Retention Experiment", the first picture is now hanging in the newly established "RTG Hall of Fame". The graphic by Laurin Steidle was selected from ten submissions by the jury, consisting of the RTG Office. "What we particularly liked about the picture was, that the depiction of a research result from the Research Training Group comes very close to a work of art. The visualisation of the Elbe estuary is also very well done - a really well-suited first picture for our "RTG Hall of Fame", says Prof. Dr. Kai Jensen, Speaker of the RTG and member of the jury.
The internal photo competition will take place every year and the photo wall in the Institute of Plant Sciences and Microbiology will be supplemented with more art works.
The graphic "Phytoplankton Retention Experiment" is based on modelling data and studies the drift behaviour of phytoplankton in the Elbe estuary in different scenarios. It shows phytoplankton in the water column (blue) and plankton stranded by tide and waves (green). The aim of the study is to gain insights about the spatial distribution of different plankton species and to understand the significance of the topology of the Elbe estuary on the survivability of plankton.
The artwork hangs in the hallway in front of room E.0.084, accessible to all.
