Gender and Diversity

Measures to promote gender equality, diversity as well as the successful reconciliation of family care responsibilities and a scientific career are central to the promotion of young researchers at the Research Training Group 2530.

We are pleased that the RTG 2530 has received funding within the framework of the "DFG Gender Equality Measures in Research Collaborations" to integrate aspects of gender equality and family-friendly science into the Research Training Group. Therefore, the RTG offers the Doctoral Researchers a series of workshops and other event formats that address these topics.

2024 - Race Essentialism in Postsecondary STEM

Presentation during the Diversity Days of Universität Hamburg (10.06.24, 11:00 Uhr, via zoom): “Race Essentialism in Postsecondary STEM: A Critical Race Theory Analysis”

And workshop for the Doctoral Researchers of the RTG2530 (11.06.24, 10-15 Uhr): “STEM Academy - through Justice and Joy“

This workshop will offer tips and strategies for how to navigate STEM academic spaces as PhD students. Rooted in a race critical, strengths-based perspective (e.g., Community Cultural Wealth), the tips and strategies will account for identities, power, privilege, and structural gendered racism. Reflexive and collaborative activities will prompt participants to think deeply about their positionality, sphere of influence, and cultural wealth that they maintain and engage.

2023 - Female Empowerment

During the female empowerment training (“Der Raum gehört mir”), various techniques based on acting and coaching were used. The aim was to support female doctoral researchers in finding and experiencing their individual strengths. By applying simulation work, group exercises and individual trainings, body language, voice and performance were trained.

2022 - Critical Thinking and Debate

The seminar was designed to prepare the Doctoral Researchers of RTG 2530 for the difficult conversations they will have and in which they will need to face certain gender biases. Contents of the two day course included fighting self-limiting beliefs, arguing against prejudiced individuals and guarding against fallacies as well as trickery.

Training methods of the course included practical exercises, concise theory inputs, plenum conversations and discussions, individual work, role play and the supreme discipline of rhetoric: the debate.

2022 - Picture a scientist: Frauen in der Wissenschaft

Film screening "Picture a scientist - Frauen in der Wissenschaft" followed by a panel discussion, which took place at the Department of Biology. The movie addresses discriminations that three now renowned female scientists experienced during their career. After the screening, scientists from Universität Hamburg gave insights into their personal experiences and subsequently, a moderated discussion was organized.
