In his iMARSYS student project, Alexander Rychwalski analysed drone video footage of fin whales feeding at Antarctic feeding grounds.
The footage was filmed by the BBC in cooperation with Dr. Helena Herr during RV Polarstern expedition PS112 to analyse fin whale feeding behaviour. When foraging, fin whales regularly perform so-called ’side-lunges’, i.e., body-rolls of >45° along the longitudinal axis, occurring immediately prior to the opening of the mouth for engulfment of prey-loaden water masses (Fig. 1). In his iMARSYS student project, Alexander analysed laterality and ‘handedness’ in fin whales, finding a strong preference for the right side, with 100% of the 63 side-lunging events filmed being right-side lunges. The results of the project have now been published as a short communication in the Journal of Cetacean Research and management. https://journal.iwc.int/index.php/jcrm/article/view/947/756
