Call for applications for the 2020 PostDoc1st award to honor completed outstanding doctoral projects in the department of biology

The Department of Biology at Universität Hamburg is announcing the PostDoc1st 2020 award. The prize is intended to be given to a highly talented young scientist who is aiming for a scientific career after completing her/his doctorate with distinction. At the time of application, the completion of the doctorate in the Department of Biology should not be more than one year ago.
The funding serves to deepen academic qualifications through scientific work, especially through the preparation of publications and writing an grant proposal in a competitive funding format (e.g. DFG Walter Benjamin program, DFG Emmy Noether program, EU Horizon 2020 - Marie-Skłodowska-Curie-Fellowships, EU Horizon 2020 - ERC Starting Grant). In addition, teaching experience of 4 SWS is acquired. Teaching should primarily be provided at the advanced BSc or at the MSc level.
The award includes funding for a one-year PostDoc position (E13, 100%) and consumables and travel costs up to € 4,500.
Documents to be submitted include a short exposé (max. five pages with a description of the planned academic work including a work plan / schedule as well as a sketch of the planned application for a third-party grant stating the respective funding format), a CV, the doctoral certificate and two expert reports from university lecturers. These documents need to be submitted as a single PDF document by email to susanne.emrich@uni-hamburg.de by January 28, 2021 at the latest.
The 2020 PostDoc1st prize will be awarded at the summer festival of the Department of Biology, which is expected to take place in June 2021. The award winner is expected to give a scientific lecture in one of the colloquium series of the Department of Biology within the funding period.
The selection committee for the PostDoc1st award includes one representative out of each of the four research areas of the Department of Biology (evolutionary biology, molecular and cell biology, ecology and biological resources, and microbiology and infection biology) as well as the head of the department.
