Biosafety & biosecurity: expertise from natural sciences required!
14 July 2021
Biotechnology is rapidly evolving, providing valuable tools for the growing bioeconomy, for improving global health, and for environmental protection. Biosafety and biosecurity measures help to prevent misuse of these beneficial developments including unwanted proliferation of sensitive technologies. Within the European Union, the EU Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Consortium contributes to the establishment of a European network of independent non-proliferation think tanks and academic research institutions which the University of Hamburg is part of. By this, the Consortium supports the implementation of the EU strategy against Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction (Council Decision 2010/430/CFSP). In this respect, Dr. Mirko Himmel provides required scientific expertise and biosecurity advice based on his research activities in molecular infection biology.
