To support doctoral researchers in clearly and effectively communicating their research topics, the RTG 2530 regularly offers a two-day workshop on ‘Presenting in English’. Here, participants learn valuable practical techniques for a convincing presentation.
The RTG 2530 brings together many international researchers, meaning English is generally used for communication. Being concise and effective in English is, therefore, a key aspect of the workshop. However, these two days cover much more than language alone: participants also learn how to connect with the audience, structure their presentations effectively, use visuals and text strategically, use body language and manage nerves.
According to the workshop leader, the first thirty seconds of a presentation are especially critical, as this is when the audience's attention is either won or lost. Once the audience is engaged, Ina Gray emphasises the importance of giving meaning to the topic, encouraging the audience to remember, ask questions, and continue thinking about it. Participants practise how this works in small groups and receive valuable feedback on their presentations.

Overall, the response to the workshop, which took place on February 18 and 19, 2025, was very positive, and participants would recommend it to others. One comment specifically appreciated the supportive atmosphere, which provided a safe space for experimentation and personal development.
