14 new doctoral researchers at the Research Training Group
21 November 2023, by RTG2530
On 1st and 2nd of November, the introductory days for the second cohort of doctoral students in Research Training Group 2530 took place. The doctoral students visited the various institutes and were able to get to know each other over dinner and other activities.
This year, a total of 14 doctoral researchers are starting their doctorates in the Research Training Group 2530. To ensure that the start goes as smoothly as possible, an introduction was held on 1st and 2nd of November to provide information on the training programme and the process over the coming months, as well as to clarify any unanswered questions about doing a doctorate in the Research Training Group.
Guided tours of the institutes
Over the next three years, the doctoral researchers will work on their doctoral projects in the respective research groups. As these are located at different institutes of the university, the researchers involved in the Research Training Group and doctoral researchers from the first cohort presented the institutes and laboratories: Monica Wilson and Luise Grüterich guided the group through the Institute of Plant Sciences and Microbiology in the Department of Biology, showing them the greenhouses and laboratories. Prof. Dr Lars Kutzbach and Fay Lexmond presented the possibilities of using laboratory and field methods of geosciences at the Institute of Soil Science in the Department of Earth System Sciences.
Tour to research sites was postponed
Finally, the social aspect played a big part as well: A bingo was organised as an ice-breaker. The doctoral researchers had to find out which of them speaks more than two languages, who has a sister, who likes baking bread and who prefers the mountains to the sea. This allowed them to exchange ideas and get to know each other better. The joint excursion to the research sites at the River Elbe, which was originally planned for the introductory days, will take place in the spring when the weather conditions are better.
