Dr. Jukka Alm is an internationally renowned expert in the field of greenhouse gas measurements. At the end of March, he was guest at the Department of Biology at Universität Hamburg for a workshop to talk about his research and to give the Doctoral Researchers of the Research Training Group 2530 tips for their own research.
In his scientific workshop, Dr. Jukka Alm gave the Doctoral Researchers an introduction in the "Dos and Don'ts in Measuring Greenhouse Gas Fluxes". In addition to giving a lecture at the Institute of Plant Sciences and Microbiology in Klein Flottbek, he also took the participants to the RTG's research site in Hohenhorst to share his knowledge on the measurement of greenhouse gas fluxes gained during more than 30 years and to give them valuable tips for their research. In the process, participants also measured greenhouse gases in the pioneer zone, the lower marsh as well as the high marsh.
Jukka Alm is a specialist on the greenhouse gas exchange and carbon balance in wetlands, especially in boreal peatlands, lakes and reservoirs. He worked as a researcher and lecturer at the University of Eastern Finland, University of Kuopio, the Finnish Forest Research Institute and the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke), a research institution working for a sustainable future and prosperity based on renewable natural resources. He contributed to more than 100 publications and was the lead author in the development of several IPCC GHG inventory guidance documents.
As part of the RTG's training program, international scientific workshops are offered each year by visiting scientists. They are designed to support the networking and international orientation of the Doctoral Students by providing opportunities for active exchange with international researchers. The main goal is to provide them with knowledge and techniques that complement those of the researchers participating in RTG 2530.
