I am interested in the various environmental stressors that mediate the population abundance and distribution of organisms
I am currently part of CYA-REMo (Cyanobacteria-Resurrection-Evolution-Modelling studies), a project investigating the evolutionary response of resurrected cyanobacteria in a warming world. In response to global warming, these phytoplankton form nuisance blooms with ecosystem consequences which include the degradation of water quality, release of harmful toxins into the water column but nonetheless, fixing dissolved nitrogen into more usable forms. To understand how diazotrophic cyanobacteria evolved through time, I will be using available molecular tools to monitor the genetic and phenotypic trait variation in Dolichospermum spp. from the Baltic Sea, in direct response to changing temperature. I am also interested in assessing the would-be consequences of their evolutionary response for the ecosystem functioning and biogeochemical cycling.
