The main interest of my research is in the fields of inter-kingdom-interaction, microalgae and bacteria, single- and multispecies biofilms, cell-cell-communication, environmental adaptation and biotechnology applications.
Since 2011 I have been active in the field of microbiology and aquatic ecophysiology as well as phycology. During these years, I acquired expertise in molecular, biochemical, (meta)genomic, (meta)transcriptomic and proteomic analyses of environmental habitats and industrial relevant microorganisms, as well as regulation of proteins, and signal transduction in microorganisms. Many of our projects and bachelor-/master-students focused on the field of metagenomics, microalgae and bacterial genetics, inter-kingdom cell-cell communication, single- and multispecies biofilms as well as the isolation of microorganisms and genes encoding for novel biocatalysts or bioactive compounds.
About the last years, I initiated work on different strains of microalgae, to uncover ‚eukaryotic-microbe‘ interactions at an evolutionary very early level, and to study signalling cascades within alga-associated microorganisms and in the alga itself. This would be done using meta- and genome analyses, RNAseq technologies, functional screening methods, and enzyme technology.
