I am interested in the evolution of conspicuous courtship signals, focussing on the role of the recipients perceptual system in this process. During my PhD, I will be working on several peacock jumping spider species of the Maratus genus. Males of this genus are very diverse in the characteristics of their strikingly colourful fans, which they display towards females during courtship. I am particularly interested in how the visual system is shaped by the environment and if pre-existing sensory biases in females act as evolutionary drivers on male mating signals.
