Flower and Fruit Biology
- Contact: Jens G. Rohwer( Jens.Rohwer"AT"uni-hamburg.de)
- Target group: advanced students in education
Flowers and fruits serve the reproduction of the plants, and to this end show multiple interactions with their abiotic and biotic environment. Wind, water and different kinds of animals may transport pollen grains from one flower to another or disperse fruits or seeds. As a consequence plants and animals developed remarkable adaptations to the type of pollination or dispersal, sometimes very specific, to the point of mutual interdependence. The focus of this teaching unit are the adaptations on the side of the plants, many of which will be examined in the practical course. The adaptations of the animals and the abilities of their senses are treated in the lecture as well. The two parts of this teaching unit are closely interlinked.
