Development of algae based biomass production:
  • Aim of this research is the development of technologies for future industrial production of algae biomass, from which interesting plant compounds as well as biofuel could be derived. Research is carried out in frame of the TERM project (Technologien zur Erschließung der Resource Mikrolage) funded by the city of Hamburg. Project partners are the Technical University Hamburg-Harburg (TU-Harburg), the Hamburg School for Applied Sciences (HAW) and the IMARE research Institute (Bremerhaven).
  • Algae biomass production is based on photobioreactors which eliminate CO2 from the flue gas of a connected gas driven power station. Photobioreactors are installed on the site of the E.ON Hanse AG in Hamburg-Reitbrook and are part of a research cooperative conducted by Strategic Science Consult GmbH and University of Hamburg. It is tested in how far flue gas can be used to enhance the microalgae biomass production.

Ecological and physiological fieldwork:
  • Effects of global climate change on aquatic plants, plant protective mechanisms against abiotic stress (UV-radiation, light- and temperature stress). We study adaptation processes of photosynthesis to changing environmental conditions like altered radiation, temperature and ocean acidification (BioAcid project of BMBF). Physicochemical methods of photosynthesis measurement as well as biochemical tools are applied.
