1 November 2008
This is an index of the collectors of spermatophyta in HBG, comprising some information on their collections. The biographical facts are taken mainly from the lists in the Index Herbariorum (CHAUDIRI et al. 1972, LANJOUW & STAFLEU 1954, 1957, VEGTER 1976 and CHRISTIANSEN 1928).
WALTHER (1965) and MORTON (1970) provide important information on the history of the collections in HBG. Up to now the following compilation is based on the investigation of less than o,oo1 percent of the material. Many collections are not filed and unaccessible in the moment. The oldest sample in HBG is Matthiola tricuspidata which has been collected 28.11.1782.

His extensive Bornean collections were still partly unworked in 1954 and probably still are: they have many undistributed duplicates also, I was told by Dr. Domke. Winkler retired during the War in 1943, when Hamburg was under constant attack. About sixty percent of the plants in the garden were destroyed by the bombing, but fortunately the herbarium escaped injury. Winkler died of a heart attack in 1945" (MORTON 1970).
