Index of collectors of lichens in the Herbarium Hamburgense (HBG)

by   T. Feuerer   ( feuerer@botanik.uni-hamburg.de)

1 February 2008

This is an index of collectors of lichens in HBG, with some information on their collections. The biographical facts are taken mainly from Christiansen (1928), Feuerer (1987) and Grummann (1974). Up to now this compilation is based on an investigation of only 5 percent of the material. The lichens of the Herbarium Hamburgense mainly consist of the collections of C. F. E. Erichsen, T. Feuerer, O. Jaap, P. Junge, C. Kausch, F. C. Laban, A. Schumacher and C. T. Timm. The oldest lichen sample in HBG, Ramalina thrausta, was collected by Clem. Berck(?) in 1824 in the Sachsenwald, Schleswig-Holstein.

Laundon (1979) erroniously states the lichenological collections of A. Allescher as housed in HBG. They can mostly be found in the Botanische Staatssammlung München (M). The lichen collection from KIEL has recently been given to HBG to improve its availability for exchange. Laundon (loc. cit.) mentions the collections of Bachmann and Weber as housed in KIEL. ALAVA (1998: 8) mentions one of the seven sets of Vainios Exsiccatae as housed in KIEL. All collections of KIEL, including those of Bachmann, Vainio and Weber, were destroyed during the war.

The largest part of the collection consists of fungi. Apparently Andersson never collected but bought exsiccatae and duplicates from other collectors (Juratzka, Moldendo a.o.). The labels have been transcribed uniformly probably by Andersson himself. As Andersson could not read all the original handwriting much of the information is lost.

CHRISTIANSEN (1928) gives some information on his biography. An extensive obituary is provided by MATTICK (1946, in ERICHSEN 1957: XII), but a complete index of his publications does not exist. His address at that time was Baumkamp 16, Hamburg 39. This presumably corresponds today with the quarter Winterhude. There is a collection of Stereocaulon alpinum from 1891 from the Allgäu, seen by Magnusson and Frey. Until about 1900 Erichsen collected mainly phanerogams in the vicinity of Hamburg, later (from 1902 until 27.9.1944) almost exclusively lichens. His main working area was Schleswig-Holstein. Occasionally Erichsen undertook excursions together with various botanists in Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein, for instance in 27.4.1902, 4.5.1902, 14.12.1902 and 20.8.1916 with O.Jaap. Collections from Germany (Hamburg, Niedersachsen, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Schleswig-Holstein), the Alps, Bolivia, Scandinavia, Turkey (1986), Madeira, Gran Canaria (1987) and Tenerife .
