1 December 2006

This is an index of the collectors of fungi in HBG, comprising some information on their collections. The biographical facts are taken mainly from the lists in CHRISTIANSEN (1928). Up to now this compilation is based on the investigation of only 5 percent of the material. The fungi of the Herbarium Hamburgense are mainly consisting in the collections of P. Magnus (142 types) and E. Ule. The oldest sample of fungi in the Herbarium Hamburgense was collected 1802. The file ends with a list of the Exsiccatae in HBG mostly following FRIEDERICHSEN (1978).

  1. Andersson, F.: - The Herbarium Hamburgense received 1128 samples of bryophytes, algae, lichens and fungi in the year 1955 (2.11.1955, Inv.-Nr.109) from the amateur, who lived in the Hamburg quarter of Volksdorf (Hamburg-Volksdorf, Am Wensenbalken 62). The largest part of the collection consists in fungi. The samples have not been collected by Anderson himself but apparently have been bought from other collectors. The labels have been transcribed uniformly probably by Andersson. As he could not read all of the handwriting some of the original information is lost.

  2. Arendholz, W.-T.: - Scientist in Kaiserslautern, formerly student at the University of Hamburg. Thesis on Helotiales (ARENDHOLZ 1979).

  9. Flögel, J.H.L. (Not in GRUMMANN): - Flögel lived in the Hamburg quarter Rissen. The Herbarium Hamburgense obtained the 6.6.1919 20 boxes with bryophytes, algae, fungi and lichens from the collector. The material from Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein has been collected in the years 1867, 1891, 1893 and 1894.

  11. Fuisting, W.: - Megalaria grossa from Switzerland without date.

  12. Hauck, Markus (* 10.2.1970): - Biologist at the Albrecht von Haller Institute for Plant Science at the University of Göttingen (Department of Ecology and Ecosystem Research, Untere Karspüle 2, D-37073 Göttingen). Numerous collections of fungi mainly from Lower Saxony (Northern Germany) from the 1980's, mostly taken together with Michael Hauck (* 13.3.1961; biologist at the Niedersächsisches Landesamt für Ökologie, Hildesheim). Nearly all species identifications were checked by Knut & Klaus Woeldecke, Hannover. Many duplicates of rarer species are deposited in the private collection of the latter. A complete list of taxa collected by Hauck in Lower Saxony is compiled in WOELDECKE (1998). Only a single mycological publication (HAUCK 1993). In the 1990's interest changed to lichenology, mainly to the lichen flora of Lower Saxony (HAUCK 1992, 1994, 1995, 1996). Currently studies on lichen ecology together with Michael Runge (director of the Albrecht von Haller Institute).

  13. Hechler, Jürgen (* 10.2.1940): - Specialist on fungi, especially Myxomycetes, scientist (Dozent) at the "Institut für Allgemeine Botanik", Hamburg. Born in Berlin, student of biology (diploma) in Hamburg, dissertation on a theme in cell biology. Many publications on fungi and myxomycetes from the vicinity of Hamburg (HECHLER 1977, 1982, HECHLER & STEINDL 1991 a.o.) and Bavaria (HECHLER 1985, 1987, HECHLER & RUNCK 1988) beside publications of general interest (HECHLER 1980). Author of a checklist of higher fungi for the Umweltbehörde Hamburg. His collections, about 7000 samples, 3500 of them myxomycetes, are not in HBG but, with few exeptions in HBG, kept privately. (hechler@botanik.uni-hamburg.de)

  14. Jaap, Otto: - Many samples from "Triglitz in der Prignitz". One sample from "Dalmatia" collected in 1914.

  15. Jahn, Erich (* 5.10.1921 in Schlehbusch, today a quarter of Leverkusen, Nordrhein-Westfalen - 10.2.1993 +): - Employee in a chemical plant, younger brother of the mycologist Hermann Jahn. Born in Nordrhein-Westfalen, Jahn lived for many years in Hamburg in the quarter Reinbek before he moved 1984 to Bad Schwartau near Lübeck, Schleswig-Holstein. Jahn specialized in Aphyllophorales (Porlinge) and Russula (Täublinge), later in coprophilous fungi, but was interested in many groups. He made famous drawings of many Russula species which are kept in HBG too. He collected mainly in Northern Germany and made trips to Baden-Württemberg (Black Forest), Bavaria, the Ahr and Mosel valley and Austria (Steiermark). Regarding his knowledge, Erich Jahn published very little. An orbituary was written by his friend T.Lohmeyer (LOHMEYER 1995). Some of his observations were published by his friends posthum. More than thousand samples. A short note on the contents of the collection is deposited in the HBG collectors registers.

  16. Loichinger: - One sample from Latvia collected in 1916 via the collection C.T. Timm.

  17. Mäckel, H. G.: - The Herbarium Hamburgense received 23 frequent lichens as a gift in 1976. The samples had been collected in Berlin, Hessen and Austria between 1921 and 1927.

  18. Magnus, Paul ( - 1914 +): - The bulk of the fungi in the Herbarium Hamburgense has been collected by Magnus. His herbarium was handed to Hamburg in 1918 but was accessible only after the second world war. Magnus was especially interested in Uredinales and Ustilaginales. There is an orbituary by LINDAU (1914). A list of publications and 142 types has been published by FRIEDERICHSEN & HEIDE (1982).

  19. Meyer, H.: - Primary and secondary school teacher ("Hauptlehrer") in the Hamburg quarter Harburg. Mainly a collector of bryophytes. 1 sample of Daedalea quercina from Niedersachsen. The collection was obtained from the Helms-Museum Hamburg-Harburg the 22.1.1964 as a continous loan.

Rönn studied in Marburg, München und Kiel nature sciences ("Naturwissenschaften"). He started the first two semester in Marburg, the two following in Kiel, continued in München und returned 1908 to Kiel. Rönn wrote his dissertation on myxomycetes (Rönn 1911). He defended the final test ("Promotionsprüfung") the 16th July 1910 (Curriculum vitae at the end of the separate of his dissertation). Beside 240 hepatics, 2393 mosses and 6938 higher plants, 3320 fungi have been bought by HBG. Some of Ule's fungi have been used by HENNINGS (1899 a, 1899 b) for the description of types.
