Index of collectors of Bryophyta in the Herbarium Hamburgense (HBG)

This is an index of the collectors of bryophytes in HBG, comprising some information on their collections. The bryophytes of the Herbarium Hamburgense (see also VITT et al. 1985) are mainly consisting in the collections of F. Elmendorff, O. Jaap, P. Junge, F. Klimmek, A. C. Kopsch, F. C. Laban, H. Meyer, W. Mönkemeyer, P. Prahl, G. Schwenker, E. M. Reineck, C. T. Timm, R. Timm and E. Ule. The oldest bryophyte sample in HBG has been collected by Flügge in 1798.

There are separates of some publications of Kurt Walther (Curator of HBG till about 1980) available on request.

  1. Acker, Hugo: - 7 samples (e.g. Homalia obtusata, Isopterygium ackeri, Isopterygium tenerum, Lopholejeunea tonkinensis, Plagiochila kehdingiana) from Tonkin (now: Vietnam) from 1896, 1897, 1898.
  2. Ahlborn, F. (1858 - 1937): - According to the "Jahrbücher der Hamburgischen Wissenschaftlichen Anstalten" the Herbarium Hamburgense received an unknown number of bryophytes and lichens in the year 1892 collected by Ahlborn in Patagonia. There is no Inventary list. (See Frahm & Eggers 2001, p.12 with portrait).
  3. Allescher, Andreas (6.6.1828 - 10.4.1903): - Bavarian mycologist. Few samples from Germany (Bavaria) dated 1948 (1848??) were received with the collection T. Wahnschaff. (See Frahm & Eggers 2001: 14).
  4. Allison, G. H.: - One sample from Great Britain (England, Tetney) collected in 1930.
  5. Allison, K. W. (1894 - 1976): - 4 samples from New Zealand (e.g. Lepidolaena taylorii, Plagiochilion conjugatum) collected 1930, 1931, 1932, 1934.
  6. Alm, Karl Gustav (1888 - ?): - One sample from Sweden collected in 1910.
  7. Ammann, Jules (1859 - 1939): - One sample from Switzerland collected in 1912. (See Frahm & Eggers 2001: 15 f. with portrait).
  8. Anderson, U.: - 1 sample from the Seychelles collected 1926.
  9. Andersson, F.: - HBG received 1128 samples of bryophytes, algae, lichens and fungi in the year 1955 (2.11.1955, Inv.-Nr.109) from the amateur, who lived in the Hamburg quarter of Volksdorf(Hamburg-Volksdorf, Am Wensenbalken 62). The largest part of the collectionconsists in fungi. Apparently the samples have been bought from othercollectors and the labels have been transcribed uniformly probably by Andersson himself. As Andersson could not read all the writing some of the original information is lost.
  10. Ando, Hisatsugu (*1922): - Prof. at HiroshimaUniv. 20 samples (e.g. Duthiella speciosissima, Hylocomiastrum himalayanum, Hypnum calcicolum, Hypnum densirameum, Hypnum fujiyamae, Isotachis japonica, Isotheciopsis comes, Kurzia fauriana, Lejeunea compacta, Macrosporiella dozyoides, Micromitrium makinoana, Mnium laevinerve, Neckera yezoana, Orthoamblystegium spurio-robustum, Plagiomnium maximowiczii, Trichocoleopsis sacculata) from Japan collected between 1960 and 1968.
  11. Andres,Heinrich (1883 - 1970): - 3 samples from Germany (Rheinland-Pfalz) collected between 1927 and 1929. (See FRAHM & Eggers 2001: 17 f.).
  12. Apollinaire,[Frere] (1867-?): - Several samples (e.g. Plagiochila keckiana) from Colombia collected 1907, 1909.
  13. Arcangeli, Giovanni (1840-1921): - 2 samples from Italy (Florenz, Pisa) collected 1876 and 1887.
  14. ARCHAVALETA, JOSÉ (1838-1912): - Prof. 1 sample (Tortula muralis) from Uruguay.
  15. ARNELL, H. W. (1848-1932): - Several samples (e.g. Bryum archangelicum, Jungermannia caespiticia) from Sweden collected 1872 - 1906.
  16. Arnell, Sigfrid (1895-1970): - Son of H. W. Arnell (1848 - 1932). Swedish Bryologist. 4 duplicates from Sweden collected in the years 1912, 1913 and 1947.
  17. Arnold: - One sample from Nicaragua collected in 1923.
  18. Arnold, Ferdinand Christian Gustav (1828 - 1901): - Before specializing on lichens, F. Arnold was interested in bryophytes and published several articles on the mosses of a region in Bavaria. HBG owns two samples from Bavaria collected in 1857 and 1860. See also the file lichens. (See Frahm & Eggers 2001: 19 f. with portrait)
  19. Artaria, Aug.: - 5 samples from Italy collected between 1897 and 1903.
  20. Ascherson, Paul (1834-1913): - 1 sample from Italy collected 1863. (See Frahm& Eggers 2001: 20 with portrait).
  21. Aßmann, Adolf (31.3.1911 - 9.12.1985): - Orbituary by MARTIENSSEN (1986). 228 samples of bryophytes have been handed to the HerbariumHamburgense in october 1966 by the collector (Inventary number 240). The material has been collected in Hamburg, Niedersachsen and Schleswig-Holstein (Sylt) in 1962. (See Frahm & Eggers 2001: 20f.)

About a dozen specimens came to HBG by exchange with NY the 28.6.1995. 3 samples (Brymela parkeriana, Kurzia brasiliensis, Pilosium chlorophyllum) from Brazil collected 1979.

  74. Burchard, OSCAR (1864-1949): Dr. Burchard was a member of the metereological stationof the German "Seewarte" of the Hamburg Airport Fuhlsbüttel. Heworked on the moss flora of the vicinity of Hamburg (1891). The collectionconsists in 727 mosses, which came to the Hamburg Herbarium the 18.8.1931.Samples from Austria (Heiligenblut) and Germany (Baden-Württemberg, Hamburg andSchleswig-Holstein) collected between 1888 and 1890.1 sample (Weissia crispata) fromSwitzerland collected 1894. (HBG: Accession number 1890). Later he lived on Tenerife/Canary Isl. and was mainly interested in succulent plants. (A biographical sketch is prepared by Dr. T. Timmann, Hamburg).

  94. Delogne, CHARLES HENRI (1834-1901): Onesample from France (Bouillon) from 1871.
  95. DEMETRIO, C. H. (1845 - 19369): 1 sample (Physcomitrium immersum) from the USA collected 1894.
  96. Dietrich, Koncordia Amalie (1821 - 1891): In younger days A.Dietrich lived together with the Apotheker and Naturaliensammler W.A.S.Dietrich, later (1863 - 1873) she was a professional collector for Godeffroy in Australia, 1871 - 1872 she visitedthe Tonga-Islands (BISCHOFF LÜTTGE 1988, see also file spermatophyta). HerAustralian mosses which are housed in Göttingen(GOET) were analized by K. Müller (MÜLL.HAL.)(See Frahm & Eggers 2001, p.78f. with portrait).

  98. Dinklage, Max (1864-1935): - Dinklage was a clerk at the Hamburg enterprise Woermann in Batanga/Kamerun (1889 - 92), later in Liberia, then diplomatischer Vertreter der Republik Liberia beim Deutschen Reich in Hamburg. During his stay in Kamerun und Liberia he collected also mosses. Samples from the Eppendorfer Moor, the Haake (Hamburg) and the quarter Klein Flottbek from the years 1887 to 1889 show that he worked on mosses already in his home town. 4 samples from Kamerun collected 1893 (e.g. Hygrolejeunea spec., Isopterygium lepturum, Lopholejeunea subfusca, Plagiochila loloensis).   99. Dixon, HUGH NEVILLE (1861-1944).: - 17 mosses from Scottland and Norway have been received the 27.9.1933 from Northampton/England.

  100. Döring, Wilhelm Ludwig (1802 - 1877): - 1 sample (Ditrichum pallidum) from Remscheid. (See Frahm & Eggers 2001: 83).

Dusén, Per (1855 - 1926): - 4 samples (e.g. Leucobryum elevatum, Leucobryum itacolumitis) from Brazil (Parana) from 1903 and 1918, 1 sample from Patagonia, 4 samples (Isotachis anceps, Isotachis madida, Isotachis spegazzianiana, Lepyrodon hexastichus) from Tierra del Fuego collected 1896, 5 samples from Cameroon (e.g. Isopterygiumnivescens, Lejeunea papilionacea) collected 1891.

  109. Duthie, John Firminger (1845 - 1922): - 2 samples (Hymenostylium globicarpum, Macrothamnium submacrocarpum) from India collected 1895 - 1898.

  111. Ecklon, CHRISTIAN FRIEDRICH (1795-1868): 1 sample (Leptotrichum capense) collected in South Africa (ex herbar Wüstnei 1861). (See Frahm& Eggers 2001: 89f.)

  112. Econopoulos: - 2 boxes.

  113. Elmendorff, Franz (1890 - 1973): - Elmendorff was a teacher (Gewerbeoberlehrer, corresponding nowadays Berufsschullehrer) in Hamburg (FRAHM 1995: 26). There are two card catalogues on his collecitons produced by Elmendorff himself. They comprise handwrittten (file 1) and typed (file 2) lists of the locations, filed by species names. Elmendorffs collection came to the Herbarium Hamburgense the 11.7.1973. Elmendorff collected in Baden-Württemberg, Bayern, Hamburg, Niedersachsen, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Rheinland-Pfalz, Schleswig-Holstein, Austria and Poland in the years 1938 to 1963. His material is one of the larger ones in Hamburg. He did not publish byhimself but handed his results to JENSEN (1952) and F.KOPPE (1964). On the basis of 47 cards in the HBG access catalogue his collection can be estimated as high as 5000 samples. (See Frahm & Eggers 2001: 95f. with portrait).

  115. Engel, John J.(*1941): - Curator at Field Museum, Chicago, USA. Samples from Cape Horn (South America).

  116. Engel, Horst (1901 - 1986): Professor and director at the "Institut fürAllgemeine Botanik" (today "Biocentre Klein-Flottbek") in Hamburg. Samples from the Hamburg quarter Rissen and the Salemer Moor (Schleswig-Holstein) from 1954 and 1955.

  212. Jaap, Otto (4.6.1864 - 14.3.1922): - Jaap was a primary school teacher(Volksschullehrer) in Hamburg in the years 1887 - 1912 (WEIDNER 1967: 270). Hiscollection was handed to HBG during the years 1895 - 1922 in 29 parts as apresent and contained mostly bryophytes, fungi and phanerogames, only fewlichens. The material originates largely from Brandenburg (vicinity of Triglitzin the Prignitz, e.g. Haplomitrium hookeri collected 1901), moreover from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Thüringen and the vicinity of Hamburg (Schleswig-Holstein, Sachsenwald). In 1893 and 1900 he travelled to the Schlern mountain (South Tirol), today Italy, 1901 to the island Röm in Danmark. Whereas his zoological inheritance has been burned 1943 in the Zoological Museum in Hamburg, his botanical collections did not share this faith.
    From the coincidence of the collection data can be seen that O.Jaap made excursions together with various botanists, for instance the 2.9.1902 and 1905 with C. Kausch, the 14.12.1902 with C.F.E. Erichsen and the 8.5.1902 with R.J.H. Lehr. (BARNHART 1965, 2: 237, GRUMMANN 1974: 22, Index Herbariorum: 305,STAFLEU & COWAN 1979, 2: 393). There are samples from Brandenburg, Hamburg,Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Schleswig-Holstein, Thüringen, Denmark from the years 1892 to 1908.(See also Frahm & Eggers 2001: 219 with portrait).

  386. Walther, Kurt (6 February 1910): - Born in Lehesten(Thüringen). Became curator (Kustos) of the Herbarium Hausknecht in Weimar in 1938. During the war he was member of the Army Investigators Staff(OKW-Forschungsstaffel) and collected 200 phanerogams in Northern Greece, Macedonia and Albania (deposited in Herbarium Hausknecht, University of Jena). 1949 to 1965 Walther was working in Stolzenau on vegetation science. From 1964 till 1971 he made collections in West, Central and Northeast-Anatolia (Izmir, Erzurum). Several thousand samples from Germany (Niedersachsen,Schleswig-Holstein), France and Turkey collected 1962 to 1966. About 1000 specimens of bryophytes from Harburg (near Hamburg) remain without labels up to now. Alltogether his collection comprises 12000 bryophytes, 6000 phanerogames,50 fungi and 200 lichens. Most of it is housed in HBG, duplicates in Ege University Izmir a.o. Many duplicates available for exchange. A more extensive biography including a list of his publications is available in german.
